Raising Average Order Value (AOV): The Part Most People Forget While Chasing Cost per Order

In short

Most people work on only half the equation: bringing cost per order down. The other half, raising the order value itself, is much cheaper and lets you make more from the same customer on the same spend. When AOV rises you can pay more for ads than your competitor and stay profitable. The tools: bundles, upsell, cross-sell, and a free shipping threshold.

When most people set out to improve performance, they think in one direction only: bring cost per order down. That does matter, but it's half the equation. The other half, which many forget, is raising the order value itself. Focus on that side and you make more from the same customer on the same spend, without bringing in one extra visit.

The equation has two sides

A campaign's profitability isn't just "cost per order." It's the relationship between what you pay to get an order and what you make from that order. You can improve it from two directions:

  • Bring cost per order down: a better offer, stronger creative, higher conversion.
  • Raise order value (AOV): the customer spends a bigger amount in the same sale.

Most people work on the first side only and leave the second, which is much cheaper.

Why raising AOV changes everything

When average order value rises, the margin you make from each order rises. That's more than just extra money. It gives you the ability to spend more to acquire the customer. You can pay more for ads than your competitor and stay profitable, which opens up scaling he can't reach. AOV isn't a luxury. It determines how far you can grow.

Tools for raising AOV

  • Bundles: "buy 2 and save," or a package that solves the whole problem instead of one piece.
  • Upsell: a bigger or better version of what they've already put in the order.
  • Cross-sell: a complementary product that naturally sells with what they chose.
  • Free shipping threshold: "free shipping over a set amount" raises the basket so they can reach it.
  • Price tiers (Anchoring): show the most expensive first so the middle one looks like a deal.

All of these work at one moment: when they're holding their wallet and have decided to buy.

The customer who has decided to buy is your cheapest sales opportunity

Keep this in mind: the hardest and most expensive step is convincing someone to buy for the first time. They've already cost you the price of an ad, come in, and decided. Selling them something extra at that moment is far cheaper than bringing a new customer from the start. That's why raising AOV is among the highest-return things you can work on.

In the T-shirt case: offer and creative on Meta and TikTok, what made the difference went beyond cheaper visits. It was building an offer that made the sale itself bigger. The same principle worked in the seasonal rush: in the Black Friday case, a double offer alone (no discount) brought 4.7 million EGP in 20 days.

The proof this lever works in any market: in the Body Romantic case in Oman, when the statics on Meta were built on the bundle ("buy more and save") instead of the single-piece price, average pieces per order rose from 2.5 to 3.95. That rise in order value is what improved the blended return from 1.92 to 3.06, even though ad spend grew 8 times.

Frequently asked questions

What does AOV mean?

The average value of a single order. When it rises, the margin from every order rises, and you can pay more to acquire the customer and stay profitable.

How do I raise AOV quickly?

The fastest levers are a bundle ('buy 2 and save') and a free shipping threshold, because they work on the customer's decision while buying without needing extra traffic.
